K is a 9-year-old boy who has been struggling emotionally since his parents divorced when he was just 5. The separation left a deep impact on K’s mental well-being. After the divorce, K went to live with his grandmother in a modest home, while both of his parents remarried and distanced themselves from him. K has not seen his mother in a long time and has no consistent relationship with his father, who now lives separately with his new wife. This lack of parental presence has contributed to feelings of abandonment, insecurity, and emotional neglect.
Living with limited resources, K’s grandmother does her best to care for him, but their financial and emotional challenges have taken a toll. K tends to be withdrawn and anxious, especially around new people or unfamiliar situations, showing signs of fear and low self-esteem.
A turning point came when K experienced severe tooth pain. Though they were financially strained, his grandmother took him to SCM clinic—his first-ever visit to a dentist. K was visibly scared and refused to open his mouth at first, indicating a heightened level of anxiety and mistrust, likely stemming from instability in his early childhood.
Recognizing the emotional aspect of K’s distress, the clinic manager engaged with him gently and gained his trust through play and positive reinforcement. She also promised him a gift if he let the dentist check his teeth. The dentist and the assistant were very gentle with K. They explained everything to him and talked to him in a soft voice. After a while, K agreed to let them check his teeth. The dentist found that K had a cavity in one of his back teeth. It was causing him pain. The dentist cleaned the cavity and filled it so the tooth wouldn’t hurt anymore.
The clinic also invited K to a “Child Day” activity, where he could interact with peers, play, and express himself in a safe, welcoming environment. This social engagement played a crucial role in helping K feel less isolated and more emotionally connected. He laughed, played, and received small gifts simple moments that contributed significantly to his emotional recovery.
Beyond the dental visit, the clinic supported the family holistically. K’s grandmother received medical and psychological support, including guidance on how to support K emotionally. These sessions equipped her with tools to better address his fears, validate his feelings, and build a more secure environment at home.
Mental Health Outcomes:
- Increased trust and comfort around adults
- Improved mood and reduced anxiety
- Positive social interaction and emotional expression
- Better emotional connection with his grandmother
- Sense of belonging and security from community support
SCM also helped K’s grandmother. They gave her diabetes medicine and a food kit to support them at home.
K’s story shows how early trauma from parental separation can deeply affect a child’s mental health. However, with compassionate support, safe environments, and consistent care, children like K can begin to heal. The SCM clinic’s intervention not only relieved his physical pain but also sparked emotional healing for both K and his grandmother.
