From Struggle to Strength: How SCM Clinic is Helping Four Friends Rebuild Their Lives

A. (16 years old), M. (15 years old), A. (14 years old), and A. (15 years old) are four close friends who dropped out of school for various reasons, shaped by their unique personal circumstances. Their stories reflect the challenges they face in their daily lives, the emotional and psychological struggles they endure, and the ongoing support they are receiving from the SCM Clinic to help them overcome their difficulties.

A. (16 years old) dropped out of school after the 6th grade and is the middle child in a family of five siblings. His father’s incarceration left the family without a primary provider, and A. took it upon himself to help support the household. He began working at a young age to cover the basic expenses, which placed a heavy burden on him emotionally and physically. His early exposure to such pressures resulted in several behavioral problems, including smoking at a young age. As the responsibilities on his shoulders grew, A. found himself forced to mature quickly, and this premature adulthood came with its own set of challenges.

When A. first began receiving psychological treatment at the SCM Clinic, it became clear that his emotional and mental health had been compromised. The therapist identified that A. had been under extreme stress due to the lack of a stable parental figure and the financial difficulties his family faced. This pressure led to behavioral problems, such as smoking, and contributed to his feeling of apathy towards his future. The psychological treatment sessions focused on helping A. manage his emotional well-being, reduce his smoking habits, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Over time, A. was able to reduce his smoking significantly, and he expressed a growing understanding of the importance of taking care of his mental health.

M. (15 years old) dropped out of school after the 4th grade and lives in a household where education is not a priority. He is the oldest of three siblings and works renting bicycles in a modest community that doesn’t place value on school attendance. His younger brother, A.S. (14 years old), also dropped out of school, and both brothers struggled with smoking from a young age. M. found himself overwhelmed with responsibilities, feeling the need to take care of his younger siblings while trying to manage his own emotional distress. His behavior mirrored that of his friends, as he adopted an apathetic attitude toward education and future opportunities.

However, after beginning psychological sessions at the SCM Clinic, M. began to slowly open up about his struggles. The therapy sessions provided a space for M. to express his emotions, understand the impact of his behavior, and make healthier choices. While M. continues to smoke, he has significantly reduced the quantity, showing that he is beginning to take control of his habits and prioritize his mental health. Alongside therapy, the clinic also provided M. with a food kit, which helped alleviate some of the financial strain his family faced. This gesture allowed M. to focus on his treatment without the added concern of where his next meal would come from.

A.Q. (15 years old) dropped out of school after the 6th grade and is now working as a carpenter. He also faced many of the same challenges as his friends, including the pressure to mature prematurely due to family hardships. Smoking was another issue A.Q. struggled with, but through the support of SCM’s psychological sessions, A.Q. was able to stop smoking completely. This marked a significant achievement for him, as he recognized the toll smoking had on both his physical and mental well-being. The therapy sessions were essential in helping A.Q. understand the deeper reasons behind his smoking habit and offering him strategies to quit.

The SCM Clinic’s intervention was not limited to just psychological support. Recognizing the broader issues these children faced, the clinic offered a holistic approach to care. Each of the four children received free psychological treatment, which focused on helping them understand and cope with their emotions, behavior, and life challenges. The clinic also provided them with food kits, which alleviated the strain on their families’ finances and allowed the children to focus on their well-being during treatment. Additionally, recognizing the importance of comprehensive care, the clinic arranged free dental care for the children, ensuring that their physical health was addressed alongside their mental health.

As part of the clinic’s ongoing support, the psychologist organized awareness sessions for the children, emphasizing the importance of returning to school and continuing their education. These sessions were a turning point for the children, as they helped shift their perspective on school and the value of education in shaping their futures. The sessions highlighted the long-term benefits of education, and the children began to realize that going back to school could offer them opportunities for a better life. This awareness played a pivotal role in motivating the children to reconsider their decision to drop out of school and to begin thinking about ways they could reintegrate into the educational system.

Though the children continue to face many challenges, including difficult family situations and financial strain, they are slowly showing signs of progress. A. has shown significant improvement in his ability to cope with stress, M. has started to develop healthier coping strategies, and A.Q. has taken steps toward building a more hopeful future by quitting smoking. A.S., M.’s younger brother, although still struggling with smoking, has reduced the quantity significantly, showing that the psychological support is having a positive impact on his behavior as well. The therapy sessions have helped them develop better emotional resilience and self-awareness, allowing them to navigate the difficulties they face with greater strength and confidence.

The holistic care provided by the SCM Clinic has been invaluable for these children. Not only have they received much-needed psychological support, but they have also benefited from practical assistance such as food kits, free dental care, and guidance on the importance of education. These interventions have given them the tools to better understand their challenges and start making positive changes in their lives. Although their situations remain difficult, they are now more equipped to face their obstacles and move forward with hope for the future. The SCM Clinic’s comprehensive approach has given them a chance to heal, grow, and build a better life, one step at a time.
