Update on Resettlement Assistance

We want to express our gratitude to all our generous donors who have purchased items through Amazon to assist the recent influx of refugees in Washington state. Over the past few years, we have found that utilizing an Amazon wish list streamlines our efforts at SCM, enabling us to effectively support these new refugees and raise awareness within the community about their pressing needs.

In comparison to past refugee family arrivals in the Seattle area where we could physically transport donated items to them, the current situation in Spokane presents logistical challenges. With nearly 20 families arriving in the past several months, primarily in Spokane, the demand for essential items is substantial. Therefore, we have established Amazon wish lists to alleviate the burden on refugees, who receive a modest amount of welcome funds upon their arrival in the country. By reducing their expenditure on incidental items, we hope they can allocate these resources towards critical matters such as acquiring a vehicle for emergencies and addressing other unforeseen expenses during their initial three-month period of support provided by NGOs like IRC, Jewish Family Services, Lutheran Family Services, World Relief, and others.

We understand that financial circumstances have been difficult for many individuals this year. However, we earnestly appeal for your assistance in helping these refugees integrate and become active members of our community. Your support will also contribute to our ongoing efforts in aiding other incoming refugees. In the event that you come across items on the Amazon wish list that are relatively more expensive compared to alternatives available at Target, Walmart, or other retailers, we encourage you to purchase those items and inform us. We will promptly provide you with an address to directly mail the donations to our clients.

We kindly request you to review the Amazon wish lists we have created, featuring the most recent five or so families who have arrived. Due to challenges in determining American clothing sizes and their location in Spokane, it would be more practical to provide gift cards for stores like Target, Walgreens, Fred Meyer, or others, where they can select the necessary items, which can be sent to our office in Seattle. However, items such as kitchen supplies, bathroom essentials, hygiene products, kids’ bedroom necessities, bed sheets, towels, and pillows would be greatly appreciated delivered to their doorsteps.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support you have demonstrated towards SCM over the past couple of years. This collaborative endeavor has been a remarkable achievement, and we value your continued involvement. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting a family in Seattle or Spokane, or if you have connections with regular visitors or residents of Spokane who might be willing to assist a family in need, please reach out to us. By offering support such as English language tutoring, accompanying them to the store, or simply being a reliable point of contact during emergencies involving their children, you can significantly enhance their journey towards stability and self-sufficiency. Every contribution at this stage is immensely meaningful and greatly appreciated.

While SCM remains actively engaged in various projects abroad, which have been our primary focus for years, the impact of the pandemic and restricted travel has necessitated our attention to the refugees in Washington state. We sincerely thank you for your continued support.

Eid Food and Supplies Distribution

Our team in Jordan just held food distribution for Syrian refugees in the area. This was to provide food for the Eid celebration and beyond. Each food parcel has about a month’s worth of food staples such as rice, beans, sugar and salt, tomoato paste and more.

None of this would have been possible without your invaluable support. Your generous donations have transformed lives, as we strive to alleviate hunger amongst the refugees there.

Unfortunately, the journey for many refugees in Jordan remains filled with hardships. As they patiently wait for asylum claims and navigate the uncertainties of their daily lives, their unwavering hope to one day return to their beloved homes in Syria keeps them going. By joining hands with us, you become a beacon of hope for these brave individuals, lighting the way towards a brighter future.

Together, let’s continue making a difference and spreading compassion to those in need. Your continued support not only provides nourishment but also ignites a spark of resilience within the hearts of the Syrian refugees, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggle. Join us on this journey of compassion and empower them to overcome adversity, one step at a time.

Thank you!

Wheelchairs Bound for Lebanon

We would like to thank Randy Winn and Bill Caldwell for organizing, transporting, and delivering 30+ wheelchairs that will go in our container to Lebanon at the end of July. They got 47 gently used wheelchairs, plus walkers and similar equipment, from the Washington State Veterans Home in Orting (where they were surplus) to our warehouse in Marysville (north of Everett) for shipment to the Lebanon Free Clinic for refugees and the poor in Saida.

If you have excess medical equipment/supplies or things like crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, etc, and would like to donate them, please drop them off at the warehouse at CostPlus Furniture (our Lebanon director, Ali Osseiran, is letting us use part of his facility). The address is 9620 State Ave, Unit A, Marysville, WA 98270.

You can also buy items we need that we have put on an Amazon list. Everything from this list will be shipped to the warehouse so there will be no need to find a way to get it to Marysville. Click this link to see the list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/38SQY7GQ4R5EK?ref_=abls_nvfly_yl

If you have any questions about what is needed or suitable, you can contact us and we will be happy to answer your questions.

NW Syria Still in Dire Need of Assistance

Still so much need in NW Syria

Join us in making a real difference in the lives of those affected by the ongoing crisis in Syria. It is a common misconception that the situation has been resolved and that humanitarian aid is no longer needed. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The conditions in northwest Syria continue to deteriorate, and the need for assistance is becoming increasingly urgent.

Inflation in neighboring Turkey is exacerbating the economic challenges in the region, where the Turkish lira is widely used instead of the US dollar. As a result, access to food, medicine, and other vital necessities has become extremely limited. This is evolving into a full-blown humanitarian crisis, with over 4 million people in Northwestern Syria desperately requiring immediate assistance. Additionally, more than 3.1 million internally displaced individuals are grappling with food insecurity and a scarcity of clean water, leading to the spread of dangerous communicable diseases.

Children in the area are especially vulnerable. The security situation is deteriorating, with escalating clashes between different armed factions. Tragically, innocent civilians, including children, are losing their lives in rocket attacks and other acts of violence. We cannot turn a blind eye to these appalling conditions. People cannot continue to live in such dire circumstances.

We are determined to make life easier for these suffering individuals, but we cannot do it alone. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a shift in international funding priorities to other regions, humanitarian aid to Syria has seriously declined. This has put immense strain on organizations like ours, as we struggle to meet the increasing needs with dwindling resources.

As the deadline approaches for the renewal of cross-border aid authorization, we must act swiftly to keep this lifeline open. The only way to help the people of northwest Syria is by delivering essential supplies through Turkey and crossing the border. However, it’s not just about providing immediate humanitarian relief; we must also focus on long-term rebuilding and resilience in the region. Experts predict that it will take a year or more to rebuild the devastated areas after the conflict subsides.

We cannot underestimate the challenges Syrians face in returning to their homes. Safety, security, human rights abuses, and persecution at the hands of the Syrian government and affiliated militias make it incredibly difficult for them to find solace. Even for those who wish to return, non-state armed groups and areas outside government control pose additional threats. The absence of safe passages means refugees are forced to stay in the areas they have sought refuge, desperately trying to rebuild their shattered lives. They still need our help, and we cannot abandon them due to political disputes.

Your support is crucial in ensuring that aid continues to reach those in need. We kindly request you to consider making a regular monthly donation of $10, $20, $50, or $100—every bit helps. Without regular contributions, we will struggle to sustain our support for the people of Syria and Lebanon. Together, we can make a significant impact.

With Eid al-Adha approaching, we aim to provide essential food supplies to the people in need. Our partners in the region are ready to distribute aid, but we cannot do it without your generous contributions. Please give whatever you can and help us spread this message to your friends, family, and others in your network. Together, we can bring hope and relief to those who need it most. Thank you for your compassion and support.

Here is just a small part of what we have been able to provide to the victims of the earthquake in northwestern Syria. We need to keep this going to make sure progress does not stop, or worse, is eroded.

Ramadan Food Distribution

SCM has been busy providing food for earthquake survivors in northern Syria. We recently sent our partner in Turkey money which was used to buy food that was prepared in meals for Ramadan, and also uncooked items so the families can prepare their own meals. This most recent distribution provided food for 200 families, about 50 of them which have taken in orphans or relatives whose parents were killed in the earthquakes. The team is also planning to distribute the ingredients to make maamoul cookies to the women so they can make their own cookies for Eid celebrations (the end of Ramadan).

Please keep supporting SCM’s earthquake relief efforts – there still will be a need for our help for many, many months to come.
