2024 Comes to a Close

SCM End of Year Recap

As the year comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the immense challenges we’ve faced and the incredible work we’ve accomplished together. This year has been anything but easy, but thanks to your unwavering support, we’ve been able to make a real difference:

  • In Gaza, we responded to the massive and ongoing need for aid.
  • In Lebanon, our free clinic treated thousands of patients, and we expanded food and aid distribution to support those displaced by the war.
  • In Syria, we provided emergency water supplies to communities in desperate need.
  • In Jordan, we distributed warm clothing, blankets, hygiene supplies, and more from our warehouse.
  • In Spokane, we continued our resettlement assistance efforts, helping numerous new families find their footing in a new home.
  • We also welcomed Cune Press into our organizational family and held two successful fundraisers for Gaza and Lebanon.

Every step of the way, you answered our calls for help. Your generosity has empowered us to bring hope and relief to countless people.

Now, as we prepare for the year ahead, the need remains great, and we can’t do this without you. Your gift today can help us continue this life-saving work. Please consider making a year-end donation to ensure we can keep bringing aid, care, and hope to those who need it most.

Together, we can make 2025 a brighter year for so many. Thank you for standing with us.

More details on our projects in 2024

Gaza

  • Gaza Medical Missions with Dr. Asma A. Taha and four others. Dr. Taha spoke at our fundraising event in April after the group’s return from Gaza. They also brought back with them the children’s artwork that we turned into our 2025 SCM Calendar.
  • 12 Food distributions and establishment of SCM Gaza Kitchen. SCM volunteers receive the funds to purchase needed items at informal markets.
  • 10 Water tanks refurbished and water supplied (new tanks are not allowed into Gaza so we have to repair damaged tanks)
  • 6 Toilet facilities constructed using recycled materials from destroyed houses. (Each facility can accommodate 3 people at a time)
  • Eid presents for children in Gaza.
  • Coordinated volunteers to provide activities (art, games, group games, etc) for children in Gaza.

Lebanon

  • 1 Container sent to Lebanon in April and it arrived in September filled with supplies for the clinic including donated equipment. Because container rates have skyrocketed we will no longer be sending them ($4000 to Lebanon when we first started compared to well over $10,000 now).
  • Additional supplies are being carried in luggage for us by people traveling to Lebanon.
  • The clinic provided dental and medical services to thousands of people – approximately 8000+ appointments for everything from dental cleanings, general checkups, extractions, and medical appointments for chronic illness management, first aid, wellness checks, and for children’s trauma mental health services.
  • 12 Community outreach events.
  • Eid presents for children in Lebanon distributed from the clinic.
  • Children’s mental health services provided to children suffering trauma from the wars, poverty, and other events negatively impacting them.
  • Food, water, humanitarian and medical aid to provided to hundreds of people displaced by war with Israel.

Morocco

  • Distribution of solar lanterns and toys to a village affected by the earthquake in September 2023

Jordan

  • Distributions from our warehouse in Madaba – clothing, hygiene supplies, food, school supplies for local Syrian and Palestinian refugee families.
  • Additional supplies are being carried in luggage for us by people traveling to Jordan

Syria

  • We provided firewood to families living in the Jenderis camp who had been burning plastic and other garbage for heat in January.
  • In the summer the organizations that had been subsidizing the water supplies in the camps in northern Syria stopped and SCM stepped in and provided emergency water supplies to several camps.
  • Food distribution during Ramadan and for Eid, including providing ingredients so the families could make their own Eid sweets.
  • Provided Eid presents to orphaned children in Jenderis and Afrin.
  • Humanitarian aid is also being provided in Aleppo and Idlib.

Refugee Resettlement

  • SCM assisted 16 new families who arrived in Spokane with basic supplies donated by our supporters.
  • We helped an additional 6 families with rent assistance to help them avoid eviction.

Cune Press

In 2022, the founder of Cune Press LLC passed away and the task of managing the press, whose mission is closely aligned with Salaam Cultural Museum’s mission, fell to his wife. She wanted to keep the titles available to the public and continue to promote writers from the Middle East and those writing about subjects important to the region, but she didn’t feel she had the bandwidth to take on this project. After many conversations it became clear that Salaam Cultural Museum would be the perfect home for the press and its titles. In October the transfer to Salaam was completed and the books have a new home with Salaam Cultural Museum. Available titles can be ordered from the Cune Press website at www.cunpress.com.

We are a small organization, but we have a big impact thanks to our supporters. Please consider making a donation before the end of 2024 so we can go into 2025 on the strongest footing possible.
