Volunteering with SCM is…
Rewarding, exhilarating, exhausting, and sometimes very emotional. You’ll be working directly with people who have experienced the worst that life has to offer but who are still hoping to find a place to raise their children in peace. Some will be sick, some will be injured, some will be ecstatic to have survived the journey, and some will seem like they are perfectly okay.
Volunteering with SCM means following the team leader’s instructions and guidance, serving the refugees, and treating everyone you meet as an intelligent individual with a past and a hoped-for future…not just a refugee.
Volunteering with SCM is not…VolunTourism
Although you’re likely to have fun with and become attached to your teammates, this is not a holiday. The accommodations are adequate but not deluxe. There will not be a lot of time for sightseeing.
The population you’ll be serving will have varying degrees of English proficiency, from none to fluent. During the time you spend with them, there may be opportunities to engage them in discussions about their experiences and their backgrounds. This is true in Greece as well as in Jordan but as the refugees in Jordan are in a fixed location and the refugees in Greece are not, there is more variability on the time you’ll be with them.
No matter how much time you spend volunteering with SCM, you will make a difference in people’s lives. Every person that transitions Greece safely and every child who gets a checkup in Zaatari means hope. And you can be part of that.
